opus sect tile

Fragment of opus sectile floor

Late Roman – Byzantine

Stone in mortar

Part of a floor decoration made from stone pieces cut in geometric shapes. A label attached to the back of the piece says ‘St. Sophia, Istanbul, 1932,’ suggesting that it was purchased in Istanbul and purportedly came from the Church of Hagia Sophia there, though there is no certain evidence it did. It was possibly acquired by May Keller while traveling abroad.
